The perfect blend of history and modernity

Over the centuries, Rue de la Corraterie has undergone a fascinating transformation. It owes its name to its original purpose: in the 17th century, Geneva’s first equestrian centre was established there, attracting horse breeders and the ‘corratiers’, the city’s first riding instructors.

From a bourgeois residential area
to a financial landmark

The fate of the Corraterie changed during the 19th century. At that time, Geneva was seeking to expand beyond its fortifications, and the Corraterie became not just a place for strolling, but also a sought-after residential address, following the construction of Switzerland’s oldest fine arts museum, the Rath Museum, in 1826.

The following year, the bank Hentsch & Cie set up shop on Rue de la Corraterie. Then it was Lombard Odier’s turn in 1858. Almost a century later, in 1957, the same bank acquired the building next door to its own, at 9 Rue de la Corraterie. In 2018, Lombard Odier sold off most of its properties on the Corraterie, retaining only its historic headquarters at number 15, before selling that too in 2025.

Today, the Corraterie reconnects with its roots, once again reinventing itself as a destination address – a place to live, stroll and experience the city, where history meets modernity and elegance blends with urban energy in the very heart of Calvin’s City.
